A few words

. . . on a more personal note.

A few passions have driven my life and work: a fascination with intellectual challenge; the longing for a world in which justice is the norm; a belief in the interconnectedness of life; and, throughout it all, an appreciation for a precisely articulated thought and a well-turned phrase.

My love for words has shaped me in many ways. It has led me to read broadly and deeply. It has helped me to think clearly and analytically, and to write effectively. For me, the act of putting words together that are “just right” is immensely satisfying. Words are not dry, dusty things; like people, they live and breathe, and can even shine. Words can help us tease out ideas. Words can make people think—or laugh or cry. Words can build community (and, unfortunately, tear it down). Words can inspire.

Most of my writing begins with research of one kind or another. Historical research is fascinating to me because it involves both imagination and detective work. It reminds me sometimes of taking a train through a darkened town. Passing by houses that are lit from within, I’m conscious of so many other lives that are going on completely independently of me. History gives me the chance to do more than just glance in a window; it lets me step inside and try to recreate the motivations and experiences that shaped the lives and actions of the people and events I am studying.

Historical writing, however, isn’t the only kind that involves research. In any writing project, I search for others who have written or spoken about this topic. Beyond that, solid organization and clear and engaging writing are essential.

Editing is a different task, but also an intriguing one. Here, my job is not to formulate the initial question but to understand the issues and perspectives of the writer. Sometimes editing can be like cutting through a thicket of brambles. Sometimes it just takes a little pruning. Whatever the need, the end result must be appealing and convincing to both the writer and the eventual reader.

I am most interested in projects whose aim is to educate, inspire, or motivate to positive action. Whether working on a large- or small-scale endeavor, my hope is to contribute to making the world a better place.
